Twelve Days of Christmas: Guiding Lights

The sun will no longer be your light by day,
nor will the moon shine for illumination by night.
The Lord will be your everlasting light;
your God will be your glory.

Isaiah 60:19 (CEB)

I love John Wesley’s commentary on this verse. He says, “60:19 The sun – These shall not be esteemed in comparison of the spiritual light of the church; but here laid down for the churches comfort as the former was for her safety, so that God will not only be a shield, but a sun. The Lord – Christ shall scatter all darkness and ignorance, and this light shall not wax, and wane, and suffer eclipses, and settings, as the sun and moon do, but shall be constant, without shadow of change. The glory – Always ministering matter of glorying in him.

Christ scatters all darkness and ignorance. Following Jesus means knowing the difference between right and wrong. It means knowing that if we love God and love our neighbors and enemies then we have no room for dark hearts and ignorant brains.

As God led the Magi to the stable with a guiding light, Yahweh leads us.

May this new year be bright and illuminate your soul.
